Axes by Gary Allman

Jim asked me to take some pictures of a couple of his axes.

Well, you know what they say: “Axe and you shall receive.” – Sorry.

McDonald’s, I’m good ‘n cold and I have two egg McMuffins!

McDonalds, I'm cool and I have two egg McMuffins! by Gary Allman

I love egg McMuffins. Sorry but it is true. They are the highlight of any early morning excursion in the car. Today I was traveling back from an overnight stop in St Louis and breakfast called. Even better there was an offer of two egg McMuffins for the price of one.

This picture also appears in my 365 Days of 2011 blog.

Guile Point leading Marks. Lindisfarne, UK

the obelisks on Guile Point that make up the leading marks into the harbour to the South of Lindisfarne (Holy Island). The seaward obelisk carries a light (Guile Point East Lighthouse) and is over 68 feet tall. I’ve seen the obelisks referred to as sinister, they certainly do loom somewhat forlornly I thought over the windswept coastline.

You can also see Bamburgh Castle on the horizon.

An attempt to get a picture of Lindisfarne Castle and use a wall to frame the castle and obscure an ugly lamp post on the quay.

Floor 4 – Tate Modern

Floor 4 - Tate Modern by Gary Allman

I liked the lighting. The original upload of this picture looked a bit wishy washy in most browsers. I’ve since fixed it – read on for more details.

Browser colour issues

Unfortunately the popular browsers don’t support the colour profiles embedded in most image files. This means that pictures viewed on the Internet are not always presented the way the photographer intended, which is an absolute travesty and a personal peeve. IE and Google Chrome are among the worst offenders. It is particularly bad when products like Google Picasa which purport to be photographic tools complete with editors ignore the embedded colour profile information.

Recently I’ve been using a Nikon Adobe RGB colour space for my pictures as it provides for a higher dynamic range – which I need to make the best of my pictures as I’m using a 14 bit camera.  However as described above most browsers fail to display the pictures properly. To get around this I’ve converted the jpeg images to the standard sRGB colour space used by default by the popular browsers. Of course this shouldn’t be necessary, but there you go.

The best browser I’ve found so far for viewing pictures is Firefox with a colour profile add-on.

You can check your browser’s compliance on this site: http://www.color.org/version4html.xalter

The Firefox profile add-on can be found here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/user/907358/

There is a lot more information available on this issue, search for ‘browser color profile support’ and lose a few hours reading all about it.

Tail light cluster of the 1963 Chrysler Gas Turbine car

Tail lights or rocket boosters? By Gary Allman

The rear end of the Chrysler Gas Turbine car the the Museum of Transportation, St Louis, Missouri.

For the curious those are lights. Apparently the exhaust has a wide thin rectangular section to spread out the exiting hot gases and thus prevent toasting any following vehicles when driving in traffic.

Iron Rooster

Jim's Rooster by Gary Allman

Jim and Carol (Ginger’s parents) came down to Springfield so that I could photograph his latest welded sculpture. Not the best timing as my main camera is FUBAR at the moment. Fortunately my compact is a very nice camera too.

Survivor by Gary Allman

Detail of the only surviving structure of Christ Episcopal Church, Bay St Louis.

The other church buildings were washed away by a 30′ storm surge when hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi coast on August 29 2005. The storm left 238 people dead and 67 missing in Mississippi alone.

Abandoned building at Bay St Louis

Abandoned building in Bay St Louis, Mississippi by Gary Allman

One can only guess that with the lower population it wasn’t worth this business staying open. This building, a long way from the shore just off I-90 is yards from a building that was destroyed.

We cleaned up rubble, wood and refuse from the site.
