Kayaking and fishing on Stockton Lake

Kayaking and fishing on Stockton Lake by Gary Allman

We decided to make the most of the nice weather and packed the van the previous night, got up extra early and loaded the Kayaks on the van before the school run. We were on the lake by 9.30am.

We took it quite easy, and I spent a fair time fishing – catching three fish. There was hardly anyone on the lake. We stopped here for lunch and to have a swim. It may not look like it but the lake drops to over fifty feet deep very quickly at this point. Very quickly being about ten feet from the shore.

I’m looking forward to changing the color of my paddles to something a little darker.

Note: I sprayed them camo green a week or so later. Here’s the result and some notes on the modifications and additions I’ve made to my Ascend FS10 kayak.

Sunset on Stockton Lake, Missouri

Sunset at Cedar Ridge, Stockton Lake, Missouri by Gary Allman

Tom took me night fishing on Stockton Lake, and despite a slow start we managed to catch some nice fish. The sunset over the lake was absolutely stunning.

Sunrise and fishing on Table Rock Lake

Sunrise on Table Rock Lake by Gary Allman

We were up early and ventured down to the lakeside to see the sunrise. Fortunately the water was very warm as I had to wade in up to my waist to get these pictures of two fishermen who were quietly trolling the lake.

The peace, tranquility, light and mist on the water more than made up for being up at six-thirty.

Fishing lures

Fishing Lures by Gary Allman

I went to Bass Pro with Tom and his son Dash to get some fishing tackle ready for the season. There is so much stuff there it’s impossible to know where to start – their angling catalogue alone has 325 pages!

With help I selected a couple of rods and some lures. Tom gave the advice of ‘Think like a fish and what you think a fish might fancy’ to be honest I’m not sure his advice was all that useful for me. I think maybe I got too many large lures, and I’ve no idea what will look like an excellent dinner to the local fish but heigh ho, if nothing else I can get loads of practice at casting and reeling in the lures.

So, if you were a fish do you think these would look yummy?

Fishing on Table Rock Lake

Fishing on Table Rock Lake by Gary Allman

Keith and Jon arrived back in Springfield on a surprise (for me only it seems) visit while crossing the country en route to Florida.

I wanted to show them a bit more of the mid west way of life, and my friend Tom volunteered to take us all out fishing on Table Rock Lake.
