This weekend we’ve been trying out our backpacking gear, but without the actual backpacking. The nearest we got to hiking with our gear was to lug our packs 20-30′ from the car to our campsite.
We decided to cheat on preparing the fire. Not wanting to spend a lot of time and energy gathering and cutting wood, we bought some logs for $4 and I split them with an 8lb non backpacking axe. However, we did successfully light the fire backpacking style using cotton wool pads coated with Vaseline.

My son and brother have been in the US on a family visit. After visiting the Gateway Memorial Arch in St Louis, we headed off home via Meramec Caverns. As Missouri has lots and lots of caves, it didn’t seem right not to include a cave tour in Robert and Ian’s itinerary.
This was my favorite picture of the tour.

Mother and daughter. For me, this is one of those pictures that makes it worth all the effort.

Looking back up the covered walkway up the debris pile to the entrance platform and stairs.
The Cathedral Room is one of the largest cave entrances to be found in the US. It measures over 200 feet high, 225 feet wide, and 400 feet long. Entrance to the cave is made through a sink hole 94 feet deep. Detritus falling through the sink hole and falling rocks from the roof has left a debris pile measuring 124 feet tall. In 1994 five hot air balloons were flown simultaneously here to celebrate the cave’s 100th anniversary.
Some research on the flying of balloons in Marvel cave produced the following links (click on the image for the full article):
And the following article, which does not appear to refer to the above event: pdf file.

I noticed the light streaming through the stained glass window onto the bible and chair by the Altar. Despite the low light and no tripod (why is it I carry a tripod around nearly all the time, but when I need one I leave it behind?) I decided to try and capture the play of light. I knew I couldn’t come close to the atmosphere of the moment, but I do like the result.

I recently wrote that I had yet to capture the ‘essence’ of myself. This, I think might be it, probably my most personal self portrait to date. I doubt most people will be able to ‘see’ it.Day 82 of my
365 Days project.
